Back On Track is an all volunteer mentoring program difficult to describe. It is a “heart to heart” experience of growth with miraculous timing. The concept of the program is non-judgmental positive regard for each individual’s feelings and their cultural background. Each individual is a “present” to the world. Cultural differences are embraced and respected as an integral part of a particular human being. We are fortunate to have various cultures within our group of participants and mentors. The philosophy of BOT is to mentor and help individuals and their families achieve career, academic and personal goals.
This unique grass roots program was initiated in 2000. It evolved by creativity and visionary thinking. The credit for BOT existing belongs to a group of incredible people who created the seed for the spirit of BOT. They worked hand in hand with determination and a sense of humor to make this a reality. To sustain the purpose and accomplish the program goals, they outreached to volunteers and potential participants. Classes and planning sessions were held on campus Saturday mornings thanks to the generosity of D’Youville College administration. Sister Ann Marie Striegl, of Catholic Charities recruited participants for our first successful class.
Mark Zirnheld, Executive Director of Saint Vincent DePaul Society and their Board of Directors officially accepted BOT as part of their programming in 2004, and built a 4,000 square foot center for BOT. It contains a computer lab, classroom space, a lending library, and clothes closet for man and women, free of charge. We are currently seeking volunteers and participants who can benefit from this inspiring program. The back on track Program is co-sponsored by D’Youville and HilbertCollege.
Helping people who fall through the “cracks” of traditional programs inspires all our volunteers. Life is about caring, sharing and helping others gain confidence to achieve, career and academic goals. Promoting kindness and understanding is contagious. Within us all lay answers to the dilemmas of life. Often a friendly face helps us see our inner strength from another perspective or empower our spirit with good old-fashioned inspiration. Mentoring helps every one become a shining star. Throughout our lives we face obstacles. Imagine not knowing which road to choose. Then imagine a program that will equip you with information you need to find the answer to your challenges.
