Monsignor John J. Conniff, PA, Diocesan SVDP Spiritual Advisor, Passes Away
Monsignor John J. Conniff, PA, died Tuesday (Feb. 28, 2007) after a lengthy illness. Monsignor Conniff, the fifth and longest-tenured director of Catholic Charities of Buffalo, retired in 1995 after 30 years as director of the human services organization. He joined Catholic Charities as associate director in 1962. It was during this time that Msgr. Conniff was appointed to be the spiritual advisor for the Society. Although Monsignor Conniff retired in 1995, he continued his presence at Society functions and board meetings was always welcome. His input, as well as his humor was valuable additions to many Society gatherings. “Monsignor Conniff was such a visionary leader for Catholic Charities that his contributions have truly shaped the face of our agency today,” said Father Joseph J. Sicari, Catholic Charities diocesan director. “His passion for reaching out to all in need and for issues of social justice led him to achieve milestones that brought more services to many more people throughout the Diocese of Buffalo.In addition to expanding the services of Catholic Charities across Western New York during his tenure, Monsignor Conniff made a difference where ever he served. Nationally, he was chairman of the United States Directors of Catholic Charities from 1969 to 1973, and locally he was one of the founders of the Community Action Organization of Erie County and participated in a committee that worked to preserve the University at Buffalo School of Social Work. The Buffalo native was born November 25, 1924. Monsignor Conniff attended CanisiusCollege, graduated from St. Bonaventure University and was ordained in 1949. Pope John Paul II also named him Prothonotary Apostolic in 1993. He received many awards and honors, including the first Gaudete Medal from St. Bonaventure University, his alma mater.
